Made the very wet and windy journey from Napier to Taupo today. The rain was lashing down over the mountain pass - thermal expressway! We stopped at a roadside cafe which was showing pictures of trucks on a looped transmission on the TV. Truck drivers - of which there are many on this road as they deliver timber down to Napier to put on the ships there - pay $2 to add their truck to the loop. Then they all admire each others wheels. It also had notices asking the, presumably local, netball teams not to stand and squat on the toilets (Mary and Cath told me in case you are wondering). All in a place which is up a mountain in the middle of nowhere. Very strange place reminiscent of scenes from top of the lake!! Taupo blowing a gale when we arrived but hoping to see the huka falls, visit the craters of the moon geothermal field (features sizzling and bubbling craters, mud pools and steam vents it says) and do a few walks in the time we have here. Lake Taupo is huge. Staying at the Bella Vista motel and just finished a very good bottle of Gewürztraminer which we picked up at the crab farm winery in Hawke's bay on Monday - our last tasting of this was at the Whalley wine shop last month with Clare and David.
